The crew of Chicago Firehouse 51 is like a family, often squabbling among themselves, but pulling together in emergencies – except that for them, emergencies happen every day. Casey, leader of the fire Truck crew, and Severide, arrogant head of the elite Rescue Squad, are frequently at each other’s throats, and blame each other for the death of a beloved comrade. Other team members include rookie Mills, who has just joined the Truck but hopes to make Rescue Squad someday; paramedics Gabriela and Shay; veteran squad member Herrmann, whose family has just been kicked out of their foreclosed home; and Chief Bowden who serves as a mentor and moral compass to the firehouse crew. Hallie, a doctor and Casey’s ex-fiancée, struggle to mend their relationship.
Language on the series of Chicago Fire included uses of “son of a bitch,” “dick,” “prick,” “ass,” “damn,” and “hell.” Violence was frequent, with close-ups of bloody trauma wounds, as well as firehouse-themed staples like burning and collapsing buildings, trapped children, injured and imperiled firefighters, and the like. Also, the first episode included Severide injecting himself with a painkiller; he quickly becomes more dependent on them as the series progresses. Sexual content in the series included sexual innuendo and references made by the crew about each other’s personal lives. The second episode included Nicki giving Severide an envelope containing her underwear, and later passionately kissing and having sex in a secluded area of the firehouse. The same episode had Hallie visiting Casey at work, and their having sex in his office.
