PTC Calls on NBC to Air "Miley Cyrus: Bangerz Tour" Special After 10 pm with a TV-MA Rating, or Not At All

Release Date: 6/30/2014

LOS ANGELES (June 30, 2014) – The Parents Television Council is calling on NBC either to change the air time of the “Miley Cyrus: Bangerz Tour” and rate the program as appropriate for mature audiences only, or not to air the program at all. The two-hour special is scheduled to air Sunday, July 6 at 9:00 pm Eastern – only 8:00 pm in half the country.

The New York Daily News reported this about the Bangerz Tour: “She broadcast a ‘parental advisory,’ warning explicit content, before going on to ride an oversized hotdog, simulate a sex act on a dancer dressed as Bill Clinton and wear a costume printed with cannabis leaves.” In addition, “Cyrus's management has reportedly been ‘flooded’ with complaint calls from parents saying the ‘We Can't Stop’ star went too far with the sexual innuendos during her 2-hour-long concert, according to TheFIX.

“Miley Cyrus built her career on the backs of teens, ‘tweens’ and their parents. But the content of her Bangerz Tour is wildly inappropriate for children and families, and NBC knows it. Given that her concert performances have been sexually graphic, laced with profanity and celebrating illegal drug use, NBC should reconsider its decision to air this program on the publicly owned airwaves altogether. But if NBC does air the program, then the network has an affirmative obligation not to air it during a time when children are likely to be in the audience, and they must rate the program TV-MA,” said PTC President Tim Winter.

“We are calling on parents and on the corporate sponsors who underwrite broadcast TV programming to be forewarned. The dirty little secret in the TV business is that NBC and other broadcast networks determine for themselves the age rating of each program, and they are financially motivated not to rate programs accurately. NBC is walking into this broadcast with eyes wide open, and if the program content even closely resembles what appears during Cyrus’ concerts, the network cannot feign ignorance about the program’s graphic content.

“The PTC will be monitoring the content of NBC’s Cyrus concert broadcast and will note the name of every corporate sponsor that chooses to associate its brand image with the program’s material.”
