LOS ANGELES (September 22, 2014) – The Parents Television Council has renewed its call to Matt Groening,
creator of “The Simpsons,” Seth MacFarlane, creator of “Family Guy,” and to the Fox Broadcast Network to remove the rape joke and
any others from the upcoming TV special featuring both the “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy” that will air this Sunday.
“Rape is never a laughing matter. Never. But particularly in light of our nation’s growing concern for high-profile cases of domestic abuse;
and particularly at a time when rape on college and university campuses appears to be endemic; it is simply indefensible for a broadcaster to use the
publicly-owned airwaves to make tasteless and senseless jokes about rape. Today, we urgently renew our call on the Fox Broadcast Network – as well
as the creators of ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Family Guy’ – to remove the rape joke and any others from Sunday’s crossover
episode broadcast,” said PTC President Tim Winter.
“Sadly, ‘Family Guy’ creator Seth MacFarlane has made a routine habit of joking about sexual violence, including jokes about date rape,
pedophilia, and even raping a 9-year old girl. When recently-appointed Fox Broadcast Network executive duo Dana Walden and Gary Newman told their staff members that
they would support the vision of their creators, wherever it may lead, did it include being led to laughing at humanity’s most horrific criminal acts
against children, women and men?
“The PTC will work tirelessly to educate the public and advocate for the removal of the rape joke from the upcoming crossover broadcast.”
Specifically, the PTC will be taking following steps:
“Our hope is that Fox and the program creators contemplate the devastating impact their actions could have on countless past, present and future
victims of sexual assault, and that they take the responsible steps to remove rape jokes from Sunday’s episode, and in fact all future
episodes,” Winter added.
