PTC Offers Parental Advisory and Discussion Forum for Upcoming Use of ‘N-Word’ on Primetime Broadcast TV

Release Date: 6/8/2017

LOS ANGELES (June 8, 2017) – The Parents Television Council is alerting parents, as well as potential advertisers, about an upcoming episode of NBC’s The Carmichael Show which will reportedly contain unedited uses of the ‘N-word.’ Although the air date of the specific episode at issue has not been formally announced by NBC, online sources suggest it will be June 21st. The program regularly airs at 9 pm in the east and the west, and at just 8 pm in the central and mountain time zones.

“It may not be among George Carlin’s infamous seven. But as we’ve seen just this past week, the ‘N-word’ on television is a verbal lightning rod for controversy and anger. And rightly so, given its historical connotation of racism and hatred in our nation. In light of the firestorm brought on by Bill Maher’s recent use of the word on HBO, we want to send an advisory message to parents that the ‘N-word’ will air at a time and place where children are likely to be watching,” said PTC President Tim Winter.

“We don’t yet know what the context will be. For some people, ‘N-word’ context doesn’t matter; while for others, context means everything. In an effort to provide a public forum for discussion and comment on this topic, the PTC has added a blog post [www.parentstv.org/nword] with different perspectives.

“We understand and appreciate that The Carmichael Show has tackled a number of hot-button issues. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Mr. Carmichael himself stated that he intends to use the word in an adult manner, and not like children would use the word. But we also know that children will be watching the show, hence our parental advisory.

“And if the word is to be used in adult situations, as Mr. Carmichael has stated, then we call on NBC to rate that episode accordingly. The NBC affiliated stations and all of the show’s advertisers should also be provided an opportunity to review the program so that they can be comfortable with the content that their hard-earned brands will be associated with.”
