Calls on President to Fill Remaining FCC Slot with Pro-Family Nominee

LOS ANGELES (June 27, 2017) – The Parents Television Council urged the Senate to approve Jessica Rosenworcel’s renomination to the Federal Communications Commission, and called on the President to fill the remaining Commissioner slot with a nominee who will advocate for children and families. Most pressing among pro-family FCC issues is the reform of the TV Content Ratings System, which has been shown to be inaccurate, inconsistent and misleading for much of its 20-year existence.

“Better late than never. While Jessica Rosenworcel’s renomination to the FCC should have happened several months ago, we applaud the President’s move and we urge the Senate to immediately confirm her to the FCC position in which she served previously. During her years of service at the Commission and on Capitol Hill, Rosenworcel has been a stalwart advocate for protecting children from harmful media content and supportive of enforcement of the broadcast indecency law. A signed copy of the Child Safe Viewing Act even adorned the wall in her FCC office,” PTC President Tim Winter said.

“We are deeply concerned about the impact that the TV Content Ratings System’s widespread problems are having on children, and we urge the FCC to support reforming the now 20-year-old system, which has provided cover for a TV industry that is allowing more adult content to be rated as appropriate for children. It’s time for that broken system to be updated to protect children from harmful adult content, and the FCC is in the position to make much-needed reform happen.

“Reforming this system will also be helpful with bridging the ‘digital divide,’ as FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has indicated is a priority. When children are reliant on the traditional broadcast TV system, there are fewer family-friendly viewing options and less opportunity to opt-out, thereby exposing more children to adult content.

“We also urge the Commission, in any capacity possible, to help bring about Cable Choice for consumers who are fed up with paying exorbitant prices for cable TV and who may not want to subsidize harmful or explicit content found on certain networks. Giving consumers the ability to truly choose each network they want to buy is the best solution vs. in the current bloated bundle or in skinny bundles still packaged by the cable industry.

“We call on the President to fill the remaining slot on the Commission with a nominee who understands, appreciates, and will advocate for the needs of children and families.”
