4 EVERY GIRL – TRANSFORM MEDIA CULTURE
The mission of 4 Every GirlTM(4EG) is to combat the sexualization of underage
girls. Our ongoing Advertiser Accountability Program – empowered by 90,000
activist volunteers – equips us with proven expertise to advocate directly and
effectively with the producers of entertainment and advertising media.
The genesis of “4 Every Girl” came when the PTC released its seminal report
entitled “Sexualized Teen Girls: Tinseltown’s New Target” (2010). The report
sparked a national dialogue on the issue of how the media is sexualizing teenage
girls. The heart of PTC’s operation is ongoing, illuminating and unparalleled
research. Two recent studies have further documented the sexualization and
exploitation of women and girls who are underage.
Preeminent television producer Mark Burnett confirmed to PTC President Tim
Winter at lunch last month, “People in the industry – including sponsors –
listen to the Presidents Television Council.”
While we will publicly hold
accountable those who sexualize (a form of abuse!) underage girls, and while the
number of our advocates will grow exponentially as the 4EG movement moves to its
next phase, the PTC cannot realistically anticipate a day when the media culture
has been so transformed that the practice of sexualization will completely
cease.
Sexualization has proven harmful effects. According to the American
Psychological Association, the three most common mental health problems for
girls are linked to the sexualization of girls and women in media: - eating
disorders - depression - low self-esteem
Sexualization harms
