    PTC Seal of Approval

This inspirational, educational, and deeply meaningful film is a wonderful celebration of Christmas.

Charles Dickens is the toast of two continents, a wildly successful author and social critic whose books are popular with millions of readers. But in November, 1843, things don’t look so rosy for the famed author. His last three books have been flops, and between his large family and his extravagant lifestyle, debts are mounting and Charles is increasingly anxious and upset – a situation which is increased when his profligate, carefree, deadbeat father, whose own failures resulted in him being sent to debtor’s prison, and Charles spending a destitute childhood slaving in a workhouse, reappears and intrudes on his family life.  Inspired by a story told by his maid, Charles decides to create a “Christmas ghost story.” With only six weeks to get the story written, illustrated, printed, and into stores by Christmas, Charles’ friends think he’s crazy – and Charles begins to question his sanity himself when characters from his book begin appearing and talking to him…including one extremely unpleasant individual named Ebenezer Scrooge. With time running out, Charles is forced to confront his own character flaws and fears from the past, as he unknowingly creates a work that will change the perception of Christmas forever.

The Man Who Invented Christmas is a magnificent film, which sensitively and powerfully shows the struggles faced by creative individuals as they deal with their own anxieties as they seek to channel their energies into making something new. At the same time, it is a wonderful celebration of Christmas and the classic novel A Christmas Carol (though a thorough knowledge of that novel is necessary for understanding the film), as well as teaching viewers about Victorian life and the life story of Charles Dickens himself. The Parents Television Council is proud to award The Man Who Invented Christmas with the PTC Seal of Approval®. The PTC recommends this film for viewers over age 10.
