The Parents Television Council responded to the news that ABC cancelled Of Kings and Prophets after only two episodes aired. “The only reason networks cancel a show without burning off the remaining episodes is that there is no advertiser support. The dollars simply aren’t there, and it is more economical for them to air something else entirely – despite the fact that they’ve paid for those unaired episodes. And based on the conversations we’ve had over the past few days with several of the most premiere sponsors in the country – during which we questioned their underwriting such over-the-top graphic violence in Of Kings and Prophets, it was clear that advertiser support for the show was quickly evaporating. While we applaud ABC’s cancellation of the show, we can’t help but wonder why they would choose to air it in the first place,” said Parents Television Council President Tim Winter.

The PTC alerted the nation’s top 200 advertisers about adult content anticipated on Of Kings and Prophets, which the show runner compared to HBO’s explicit “Game of Thrones,” saying, “It’s suspenseful. It’s extraordinarily violent. It’s sexual. … We’ve sought to make the show modern…This is a non-dragon version of ‘Game of Thrones.’” In addition, the show runner Chris Brancato said that he’ll be ‘ fighting with broadcast standards and practices ’ and that ‘ we’re going to go as far as we can’ throughout the series.

After reviewing the premiere episode before it aired on ABC, the PTC also warned families about the graphically violent content and did not recommend the show for children.

Keep up your extraordinarily fine and vital work! I have donated in the past and most assuredly will in the future!

      Bravo! Another PTC victory!

I’m hoping to make a donation soon, too!

This is the problem with society today anything based on the Bible has always have some type of criticism first off why are your children up at 10 o’clock at night HBO to take over the series because it was a good show if you want to be a responsible parent put your children to bed at a decent time they should be getting ready for school

I strongly disagree with your take on this show. I believe David’s side was riveting. And I am sorry at 10pm, children should be sleep anyhow. That’s true parenting. Kids need to be blocked from more than a Biblical TV show. Try Facebook, and most social media sites. Far more detramental. Hate to tell you, David’s story was risqué, have you actual truly studied and broke down the Bible. He was terribly flawed, but we all are. The Bible is filled with wars, sex, violence & lies. Are you protesting ABC’s TGIT line-up?! Food for thought! And no people don’t have to agree with my view, because as heck don’t like this one of yours!!!

I totally disagree with pushing this show off the air. The Old Testament was filled with violence and sex. I agree that they didn’t need to show the sex as detailed as they did. If you know the Bible, you would know there were many, many, many battles/wars along with a lot of death. They chose to air the show at 10pm EST. It up to the parents to prevent the children from watching this show this late at night. What good parent would allow their children to stay up at that time of night to watch tv?!

If you don’t like of Kings and Prophets or any other show do NOT watch it and or prevent your kids from doing so. To think I served this great nation to fight for people like you. I’m extremely disappointed in your actions. You should reside in a a communist country if you want sensorship……

Indeed, there is a lot of violence in Biblical stories. And sex. I’m not sure two episodes is enough to give the show a fair shake. I wondered how Biblically accurate this was going to be and not sure how I was going to feel about it if it deviated from the Biblical story but for the first couple of episodes, I was entertained. So you got this off the air, but it’s ok to continue with the overdone glut of murder-investigation shows with their gory details? Why don’t you go after them? At least this was something a little different. How many corpses with bullet holes and slashed throats do we need to see while the crime investigators discuss it? How about going after silly shallow things like “The Bachelor” that probably don’t promote values you’d like to see on tv? How about… oh, any number of other shows.

So let me get this straight – rather than just, oh I don’t know… NOT WATCHING A SHOW YOU DON’T ENJOY! You chose to push for it to be cancelled? This website is such a freaking joke, it’s grown harder to laugh at the stupidity and absurdity like I normally do, and in fact I’m brainstorming how people like myself – people that believe rather than insisting everything should conform to your wishes, you should just PARENT YOUR OWN DAMN CHILDREN! – can get this horrid site shut down.

If you check out a show and feel it’s not appropriate for your children, either stick with shows you know are safe, or *GASP* TURN OFF THE TV AND BE AN ACTUAL PARENT, YOU LAZY BUFFOONS. Play with your children, get down on the floor with them and build with blocks, race toy cars, play pretend with dolls and stuffed animals, have a tea party, get out some blank paper or a coloring book and color/draw! ETC. ETC. ETC. Or, and I know this must be super hard since some of you only know how to write ignorant comments, READ WITH YOUR CHILD! Reading is so important, and far too many kids don’t enjoy reading nowadays and it’s so disheartening. Just… stop using electronics to babysit your child, it’s lazy and poor parenting.

The point is, STOP BEING BULLIES! And yes, that’s exactly what you are – you don’t like something so you decide you’re going to attack it and try to push it out [get it cancelled] rather than just ignoring it/leaving it alone since you dislike it!

I totally agree with Holly’s parenting advice above, but I really think that she is missing the point of this site.

She says “STOP BEING BULLIES”, but her tone is one of aggression, sarcasm and pushing… the very thing a bully does. Contrary to Holly I think she should comment and this site should continue to do what it is doing.

The other thing I think she missed is that PTC seems to have a wider view of society. This is not about one family shutting off it’s TV, it is about the fabric of American society. Everyone in our society feels like people should just let them make their own choice and to an extent that is true, but in another sense there are people that are responsible to the greater society as a whole and those who could care less. PTC cares about the greater society as a whole, which I applaud, even when I disagree with them.
