• An Open Letter to Justin Timberlake Regarding His Upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show Appearance

    Dear Justin,

It’s been a long time – almost 14 years – since you, the Super Bowl and the Parents Television Council were all mentioned in the same news stories. Much has changed during that time. You became a husband and a father. You became a generous philanthropist, both on the golf course and in the classroom. You’ve become an advocate for worthy causes. And you’ve brought us joy through your music and your film performances.

But while much has changed, much remains the same. The fallout of your performance during Super Bowl XXXVIII has left an indelible mark. You really threw us – and millions of parents who were watching with their kids. The now-infamous wardrobe malfunction was the biggest news story for weeks, even at a time when the nation had launched into war in Iraq. Congressional hearings and Supreme Court cases followed. Standards for indecency on the public airwaves are still hotly debated today.

As we approach this Sunday’s Super Bowl LII and its halftime show during which you’ll be performing, we ask you to keep the halftime show friendly and safe for the children watching, and who may be hoping to emulate you one day. The media has been asking you about this very thing – and we are heartened by your response that the events of 2004 are not going to happen in 2018:

“It’s just one of those things where you go, like, ‘Yeah, what do you want me to say?’ We’re not going to do that again.”

“I stumbled through it. To be quite honest, I had my wires crossed. It’s just something that you have to look back on and go, ‘OK, well, you can’t change what’s happened, but you can move forward and learn from it.”

Our children are confronted with enough harmful and explicit content in today’s entertainment media – content that sexualizes our daughters; graphic violence that connotes acceptance as an answer to life’s conflicts; glamorization of underage drinking and drug use; normalization of children using harsh profanity; and a litany of other messaging that runs counter to the values most parents work to instill in their kids. The Super Bowl, and particularly its halftime show, should be the hallmark of entertainment that’s both appealing and a safe place for the entire family.

Thank you for considering our urgent appeal for a positive, uplifting and entertaining halftime show on Sunday. Because our Children are Watching. Break a leg.

    The Parents Television Council

Thanks “K” for the great comment and back-up. And, Wade is totally mistaken. Unfortunately people keep watching the trash TV so trash keeps being produced….more and more of it. If every red-blooded loving American stopped watching the NFL because of their utter disrespect, those boys (not men) would not get paid. Maybe they all need to have a tour of duty to understand the real price paid for this country’s freedom, and those who are here on a free-ride can go back to their country. It is the silence of people who care that give way to the foolish and their foolish ways. As for the cheer teams, women are being so totally disrespected, used and abused, and many don’t even realize it. You don’t have to be partially naked to be beautiful. Women need to realize that fact and cover up!! Let us never give up in protecting our children and grandchildren from the things that are not good for their precious souls. IN GOD WE TRUST!

Your totally mistaken Teresa along with K as well. TV is no worse than what it was 20 or 30 years ago fact and truth there isn’t any trash on TV lots of great TV shows 100 Million will be watching the Super Bowl tonight which the NFL will always have millions watching no matter what since they are 1 number by a long mile. Wrong women aren’t being totally disrespected if they are cheerleaders nothing wrong with what they wear again no facts or proof to back up your claims bet you wouldn’t say it to a cheerleaders face just sayin is all.

TV is a million times worse than it was 20 or 30 years ago and that’s a fact!! To say it is not, is a ridiculous statement. Much of what is on TV today could only be seen in an “R” rated movie in the movie theaters years ago. It’s like the frog in a boiling pot of water. As the water warms slowly, the frog stays in until it boils. That’s what has happened with TV. They slowly add more and more porn, etc to shows and promote their agenda……brainwashing. And, yes, I would tell a cheerleader to her face to put more clothes on. I love my sisters in Christ enough to tell them the TRUTH! I’ll pray for you Wade.

Wrong TV isn’t a million times worse as you have claim that is a ridiculous statement primetime TV shows don’t show porn comeback to me when there is skinamax on in primetime then you can talk. R rated movies have always been aired on broadcast TV which I have no problem with that and TV doesn’t brainwash either.

After the incident in 2004, which caused national outrage toward the performers, the network and the NFL for many months, I’m baffled why Justin Timberlake was ever invited to perform at another Super Bowl halftime!

With all the successful musical artists to choose from — why him? The 2004 incident was egregious enough that a lifetime ban should have been the only course of action.

It’s almost as if they are courting controversy. I hope nothing inappropriate happens this time, but it would serve the NFL right if it does.

I don’t believe in a lifetime ban the NFL proved their point when they went with older acts from 2005-10 for Super Bowl Halftime which Sir Paul was good, Prince and doing his performance in the rain, The Who jumped the shark was glad when they went with more current from 2011 and beyond. I doubt that you didn’t see it live only saw it the next day which I didn’t think was that big a deal somewhat a boob was shown for only a second. Which isn’t going to harm a child like The PTC try and make it out to be in their phony outrage even The FCC Chairmen in 2014 admitted that he was doing it for the show with the phony outrage.

I saw it the day after people talk more about Janet’s boobs than what a great game it was between the Pats VS Panthers in Super Bowl 38 was glad that Supreme Court threw out the fine in 2012 that finally ended it.

Thank your Million Moms for your caring. I’m a mother and a grandmother. I do care very much about the healthy environment for the youth. Innocent young minds exposed to weird and emotional unstable people.
We are witnesses when some people shows bad language, bad manners and offensive demonstrations over respectful tradition in our country. I don’t see the positive side of that. Very sad.
God protect the young people and guide the young parents.

All you have to do is read the comments and you can see that this is just a sign of the time. A lot of people don’t see where there was a problem and that is in fact the problem. When I was younger if someone did that they never would have been heard again in Hollywood never would have been thought of never would have been seen on television no respect no values and unfortunately it is becoming very contagious. Many of the comments are about Justin not being talented I don’t know if he is talented or not I enjoy some of his music like everyone else but the fact of the matter is there are a lot of people that do not see how it was a big deal to see nudity on television this is the sign of the times people are allowing it to happen people don’t care anymore and I do not know why.

I concur completely with PTC and THANK YOU for expressing our concerns on behalf of all concerned families. I would NOT watch the super bowl and have not watched the pathetic NFL at all this season ….. they seem to ANTI-AMERICAN for sure … no doubt!! I hope and pray the ratings will be at the LOWEST LOW EVER!! I also agree completely with Ms. Behm’s comment above regarding what the NFL promotes. Think about how many young Americans are watching these grown men disrespect our American Flag and the National Anthem….maybe they (NFL) needs a good lesson in history and why it is IMPORTANT to honor our American Flag and The National Anthem. Not to mention the half-dressed “cheer” teams on the sidelines.

        February 2, 2018 at 2:55 pm

Wrong the NFL isn’t Anti-American as you have claim which is a lie without facts or proof and The Super Bowl will have over 100 million in the ratings. I don’t care if the players kneel I’m so over National Anthem stand or kneel or whatever which only a few players still kneel otherwise the issue is over which was way overblown from the start. I have no problem with what the Cheerleaders wear on the on the sideline see way worse on the beach let me guess you don’t like Hooters either because of what the waitresses wear as well.

No WADE YOU are wrong. Teresa is right. It is not a ”lie” and the proof is on the tv and in the stadium in front of people’s eyes. How stupid saying there is not proof..DUH. You “don’t care” that is true. THAT is the reason for the article and the whole point. But guess what Wade, it is Not About You. It is about protecting our children –and parent’s right to not have their children exposed to public nudity, profane language or any other ”normalizing” attempts by the media of images, deed, and words offensive to many americans, against the laws of public decency and violating the code and duty of the FCC . The reason it is happening is spiritual. It boils down to right and wrong. Law and Rebellion and we all know who is on team rebellion..mr I WILL himself and all his children focused on me, my and I. Public means more than YOU..democracy and republics make law based on a c o n s e n c u s–more than just you. Many were violated by that superbowl stunt. Not caring about others or what they think because YOU cant see what is wrong or are ”so over” it is the epitome of self centeredness. Not caring that the law was broken because you don’t see what is wrong with it well I’m sorry that is rebellion/anarchy as well as disrespectful of other american citizens beliefs. I’m sure when it is a cause you belief in you expect others to respect that and are wrong if they don’t-am I right? It is no different here other than YOU don’t agree…that is too bad change the law then. Right now it is on the books for a reason and if you don’t uphold the law you have no society that is safe for anyone. Yes cheerleaders uniforms get skimpier and skimpier-I think it is raunchy-but it is not against the law. I agree people on the beach sometimes wear less and that is just as gross. Respect for our flag, our country and the service men who risk their lives to give you the freedom to BE ”so over it” is way more CRUCIAL than some overpaid manchild’s ignorant disrespect of the people who pay to watch him and the country that allows him to play games for a living and the men, women, children of these men and women who give arms and legs and sometimes lives so people like you can shoot your mouth off and people like them can play games. It is a matter of disrespect and complete lack of appreciation for what they have showing they think they dserve it…EGO full circle back to me, my, I will.

Military vets some of them would say they gave them that right to kneel for our freedoms and I respect men & women who are servicing & that did for the country so it go’s both ways.

It isn’t the governments job to police what is on TV that is parents job why I believe parents not government job. Those that file complaints to The FCC have too much time on their hands which 99% from The PTC which is wrong and abusing the power which isn’t right. I believe government censorship of TV is supporting the nanny state which is wrong on all levels and I don’t support any go’s come back to me when their is skinmax on primetime TV then we can talk, but TV is no worse than what it was 20 or 30 years ago fact and truth.

Well said PTC! Pro sports is supposed to be family entertainment, inspiring kids and adults alike with a positive outlook on life. Let’s hope that Justin and the NFL get it right.

Thank you for your letter. You have expressed what most of the parents in this country are thinking and would expect from such a widely-viewed performance. I believe Justin when he says that the show will be different this time. He was much younger then and made a poor decision. I’m just glad that all of my poor decisions have not been played out on national television for the world to see. I look forward to his show!

I hope you’re right, but having tuned out most of the half-time shows for years, I will only cautiously try to watch this one. For years, it seems, the NFL and the entertainers don’t seem to care about the quality of the show, only how loud and amoral it can be. Not only 20+ age group watch the show. Please have respect for he rest of us AND the children that are in the room…

I agree. The half-time shows used to be entertaining. They have turned into mostly trash over recent years. Many people, even men that you would not think would object, were complaining about it last year, wondering why they cannot seem to produce family-friendly half-time shows any more that everyone can enjoy.

Halftime shows are very entertaining and very family friendly from Black Eye Peas in 2011, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, Lady GAGA last year all very family friendly.

God established marriage and sexual intimacy to be in the confounds of marriage only. Christians are to dress modestly and not be a stumbling block for others. Christians should not support the NFL or the Super Bowl due to the fact that the NFL promotes and allows values directly against the Word of God and against this nation.

I have one small question. How do you know Justin Timberlake will ever read this? He probably has no idea this website even exists. If you wanted to get his attention, you should have figured out what his home address was and mailed it to him.

If you did that, great. If not, you lost and he won.

There are many ways this letter can come to the attention of Mr. Timberlake. Perhaps you missed the Share buttons above for various sites. I have already taken advantage of them, plus I’m forwarding this to all of my list. PTC has lost nothing. Doing what is right is always a winning hand.

The PTC doesn’t know what is right since their a censorship org that is always wrong and lies about everything they abuse The FCC if I was member of FCC I’d scold them and how wrong they are. They always lose since they are on the wrong side of history and I doubt that Justin Timberlake hasn’t read the letter or doesn’t care wouldn’t say one way or other. Like most everyone doesn’t listen to the censorship org like NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox, The CW.

two things happen in that super bowl 2004 but only talk about janet Jackson and Justin timberlake incident but nobody talk about the naked man run buttnaked at halftime. That made me think they was trying to cover up other incident?

Reading the riot act I see wrong like always and you need to leave Justin Timberlake alone. I’ll be enjoying Justin’s performance during halftime of the super bowl should be very entertaining Justin is a very great performer along with his music as well.

        January 31, 2018 at 2:31 pm

Justin Timberlake isn’t two face no talent Justin is very talented makes great music going to be a great Super Bowl halftime show. I doubt there isn’t going to be stunt which he didn’t do in 2004 as The PTC claimed in their phony outrage that one saw live big deal that a boob was exposed less than a second.

        • Prodigal48
          February 2, 2018 at 12:33 pm

I agree that Justin is talented. But that doesn’t give him the okay to do what was done in 2004. Even he apparently admits it was foolish. The outrage went far, far beyond PTC. If you think they are the only ones who objected, you must live in a bubble. If you have the need to see women’s breasts displayed, there are plenty of other places you can find them. They do not have to be shown where children and families are watching.
