This family-friendly film updates the beloved classic story to the modern day.
Four sisters – Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy – promise to support one another in making their dreams for their lives come true. Amy wants to be an artist; Meg wants a husband and children; Beth just wants the sisters to get along and care about each other; and the oldest, Jo, wants to be the world’s greatest novelist. As time passes, the girls grow from children, to teens, to adults; but while the others move slowly toward their dreams, everything goes wrong for Jo…not least, because of her own rigidity, bossiness, and temper. But through it all, the sisters retain their love for one another – even as tragedy strikes their family…
Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women is a classic of literature, beloved by generations of girls and young women. PureFlix’s retelling updates the story with a modern setting; but unlike many such “reboots,” it retains all of the relationships, storylines, and characterizations intact. More importantly, it offers younger viewers the opportunity to be enchanted by the moving events of the novel.
The film has little content to concern parents. On her first trip to the prom, Meg is persuaded to sip alcohol, and a teenage boy comes onto her, and gropes and sexually harasses her; but when Meg pushes him away and makes clear she is not interested, he departs. As a youngster with her first cell phone, Amy is bullied by classmates making fun of her clothing and appearance. These events are an updated version of some of the travails suffered by the girls in the original novel, though they may be more relatable to kids today.
PureFlix’s Little Women is a deeply moving reinterpretation of the beloved original novel. For its fresh presentation of classic children’s literature, and for its emphasis on family-friendly values, the Parents Television Council is proud to award Little Women with the PTC Seal of Approval®.
The PTC recommends this film for all viewers over age thirteen.
Below is the presentation of the PTC Seal of Approval® speech by Dr. Gildemeister to Clare Niederpruem, Director and Adaptation Writer of Little Women.
