If TV ratings are wrong, how can parents do their job?

The TV Content Ratings System is failing America’s children. The TV ratings (TV-G, PG, 14, and MA) were designed to accurately inform parents about the content of television programming, and help parents decide what is appropriate for their children. But this system clearly does not work, and the PTC is leading the way to fix it!

In a new study, the PTC found that, over the last 20 years, the TV content ratings system is inadequate for the purpose of protecting Ratings Reformchildren from graphic sex, violence, and profanity on television.

The TV ratings (TV-G, PG, TV-14, and MA) are supposed to accurately inform parents about the content of television programming, and help them decide what is appropriate for their children. BUT THEY DON'T!

The problem is that the TV content ratings system is run by the TV networks -- the same businesses that profit from showing explicit content to kids. The same companies that create the TV shows also rate the shows and run the oversight board which monitors the ratings process. This is a serious conflict of interest which would never be tolerated in any other regulatory body.
